![]() ![]() ![]() The team had known since the beginning that they had to hold back on using high-polygonal modeling. Once conceptualizing was done, the team started working on modeling and rigging. It became clear later that this wouldn’t look too convincing, so the team suggested making Ezra hover in the air, kind of like Watto from Star Wars. An interesting fact about Ezra, the game’s main heroic dragon – initially, this character was meant to use its small legs to walk on the ground. The team received T-pose concept arts of the main characters and used them as a basis for ZBrush modeling. Using the existing 2D game assets simply wouldn’t work for the story the team was willing to tell, so they had to work up these models, using the game as a reference point. The Merge Dragons game has a well-established lore, but players never quite get a good sense of the main characters' personalities in fact, we never see them confronting each other in the game. ![]() In the case of Merge Dragons, the story unfolds through two focal characters – Ezra and Evil Fog and the setting where they are placed. Pre-production is the process of setting up a stage so the story can happen. The team used two production pipelines to achieve their goals – Maya-Arnold for the primary trailer and Unreal Engine (and all of its bells and whistles) for the other four. Here is what you can learn from their experience to speed up trailer production while achieving stunning visual results. That’s the strategy that the Heroic team used to create a series of trailers (one lengthy primary trailer and four shorter ones) for Merge Dragons – a 2D mobile arcade game. As a result, the feasibility of your production process increases, justifying the means according to the chosen objectives. If you have less options you can't capitalize on the unique benefits of different engines. Multi-pipeline production gives you enough flexibility to approach creating trailers in a better way. So how can you make it all happen while delivering high-quality cinematic trailers to your client's expectations? Why Multi-Pipeline Production is Beneficial That makes trailer production somewhat limited for small projects, yet not impossible. That requires significant investment – both time and money. There is a lot that goes into trailer production – storyboarding, modeling, animation, VFX, rendering, etc. ![]()
